Why choose an alternate spring break trip?
Alternate spring breaks are a chance to give back and make a difference while living a transformative experience.
Whether you're building houses or teaching sports, your efforts have a direct, positive effect on communities and ecosystems. It's a powerful feeling to know your vacation time is improving lives, and being truly immersed in a destination is fulfilling in a way that lounging poolside can't match.
Personal growth and development
Stepping out of your comfort zone and engaging in service pushes you to grow as a person. You'll gain new skills, confront challenges, and discover strengths you never knew you had.
Alternate spring breaks also offer rich opportunities for learning. Immersing yourself in a new environment and working alongside people from diverse backgrounds broadens your perspective. You'll come away with fresh insights about yourself and the world. It's the kind of education you can't get in a classroom.
Many students report feeling more grateful, more empathetic, and more motivated to make a difference after an alternate spring break.
Beyond the personal growth, these trips are also a chance to develop leadership skills and build your resume. Employers love seeing community service and cross-cultural experience. But more than that, alternate spring breaks inspire students to be global citizens and lifelong volunteers.
Unique and memorable experiences
Alternate spring breaks are packed with one-of-a-kind experiences you'll be telling stories about for years. The unique combination of adventure, service, and camaraderie creates lasting memories.
You'll also forge deep bonds with your fellow volunteers. Many students say the friendships formed on the trips are the most meaningful part. Shared purpose has a way of bringing people together like nothing else.

Popular types of alternate spring break programs
Alternate spring breaks come in all shapes and sizes. Here are some of the most common types of volunteer work:
Environmental conservation projects
These trips focus on protecting and restoring natural habitats. Popular activities include helping at permaculture or agroecology projects, cleaning up beaches, and caring for abandoned or injured animals. Some programs also include wildlife conservation efforts like monitoring sea turtle nests.
Environmental projects are a great fit for outdoorsy types who don't mind getting their hands dirty. You'll work hard, but you'll get to spend your days in some of the most beautiful places on earth.

Social impact projects
Social impact or community development projects aim to improve quality of life in underserved areas. This could mean building affordable housing, teaching English, or playing games with kids at a non-profit school, for instance.
These trips often include a strong cultural immersion component. You'll live and work alongside locals, learning about their daily realities and challenges. Expect to step outside your comfort zone and confront complex social issues head-on. It's challenging work, but incredibly eye-opening and rewarding.

Work exchange programs
Volunteering during your spring break doesn’t always need to have social or environmental proposes, though. There are also plenty of work exchange opportunities where you can offer your time and skills to small businesses, especially in the hospitality industry, in exchange for accommodation and other perks.
These experiences can be a great way to meet other travelers from all over the world, get a deeper immersion in tourist destinations and save a lot of money on your trip. You can have loads of fun by bartending at a hostel bar, helping decorate a guest house or taking photos of a fancy hotel, for instance.

Costa Rica is a great choice for alternate spring breaks. Imagine yourself in a Central American gem teeming with life - from the dense, vibrant jungles to those untouched beaches that seem straight out of a postcard. Volunteers can contribute to a variety of conservation projects, such as protecting sea turtles.
One of the many hosts there is the Asociación Comunitaria para la Conservación de la Tortuga Marina de El Progreso (ACOTPRO), a community-led sea turtle conservation project located in one of Costa Rica's most beautiful and unique areas - Drake Bay.
The setting is wild and the field station is rustic, but the experience of working with turtles and living and exploring the Corcovado area is unforgettable. You will get a real authentic Tico experience and you'll also meet lots of other volunteers and locals. They take on volunteers for one week or more.

Design some art projects on the land or create a project using hand tools.
“This was my first work away experience so the community will always have a special place in my heart! I got to explore New Brunswick through hikes and tours! The work was great. It's amazing watching everything come together in the final days. Braydon is a gracious host and an excellent cook! If you're looking for an off-grid experience, this is definitely for you! This experience has helped me connect more with nature and the environment. Much needed! Thanks again!”, said Samantha, from the US.
5. Children NGO in Uganda
The Freedom Program is an NGO that helps to give education for more than 60 kids, among orphans and kids from very poor families that can't afford the school fees. They need help to build and maintain the business.
“You don't need to be expert, we teach you everything you need to know, we need people with good will and great heart to help us build a better future for our children. We promise you a fun and inspiring time: you will work among locals, get to know Ugandan culture, and be rewarded by the purity of the local children!”, says the host.
6. Ocean-side hostel in California
This host is in the process of opening a new hostel along the California coast in Monterey, CA. Volunteers help staff by folding laundry, cleaning, making beds, and sharing new skills. They are seeking volunteers that want to experience Monterey Bay as a local, engage with other guests, and bring a positive and productive vibe.
“If you have any special skills you want to share with us, please let us know! Once we open, our ambassadors exist primarily to engage our guests and help welcome them to Monterey! Training is provided by our full-time staff”, says the host.
