Oktoberfest camping: is it worth it?
Oktoberfest is a world-renowned festival that draws millions of visitors to Munich each year. Amid the festivities, the demand for accommodation skyrockets, making traditional lodging options expensive and often fully booked. This is where Oktoberfest camping emerges as an appealing alternative. But is it worth it? Let’s delve into the benefits of camping during Oktoberfest.
Cost-effective accommodation
One of the most compelling reasons to consider Oktoberfest camping is the potential for significant cost savings. During the festival, hotel prices can soar due to high demand, making them unaffordable or unavailable for many visitors.
In contrast, camping offers a budget-friendly alternative, with campsites typically charging a fraction of what hotels do. This allows you to allocate more of your budget to enjoying the festival itself.
Campers have various options, including tents, caravans, and campervans. Whether you bring your own gear or rent equipment on-site, there are choices to fit different preferences and budgets. Some campsites even offer pre-pitched tents and glamping options for added convenience and comfort.
If you want to save even more and have an amazing experience, there's even the possibility to camp at Oktoberfest for free, by volunteering together with people from all over the world. We'll talk about that later in this article.
Closer connection to nature
Camping during Oktoberfest allows you to experience the festival in a unique and refreshing way, combining the excitement of the event with the tranquility of nature. Bavaria is renowned for its stunning landscapes, and camping puts you right in the heart of it. Waking up to the fresh air and scenic views can be a rejuvenating contrast to the bustling festival atmosphere.
Additionally, many campsites are located near beautiful natural areas, offering opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking and biking. This can provide a perfect balance to the festivities, allowing you to explore and appreciate the Bavarian countryside.
Community and camaraderie
One of the best perks of Oktoberfest camping is the sense of community that develops among campers. Campgrounds are social hubs where you can meet people from all over the world, sharing the camping experience fosters a sense of camaraderie that extends beyond the festival grounds.
Many campsites organize their own social activities, which are additional ways to enjoy the Oktoberfest spirit and create lasting memories with new friends. Imagine bonding with people from all over the globe over a shared love for beer, laughter, and all things Oktoberfest. It's a chance to make lifelong memories and experience the festival like a local.
Choosing your Oktoberfest campsite
Selecting your home base for your Oktoberfest camping trip is a crucial first step. You’ve got options - from organized campsites catering specifically to festival attendees, offering amenities, and promising a lively atmosphere, to more traditional campsites.
Places vary in terms of the facilities they offer, with some providing basic amenities like showers and toilets, while others offer more luxurious options. Research your chosen campsite to ensure it meets your needs.
Depending on the location of your campsite, you may need to plan for transportation to and from the festival. Some campsites offer shuttle services, while others are within walking or biking distance.

Be prepared with your desired dates and the number of people in your group, and then follow their booking instructions. Payment options and any applicable fees or deposits are often clearly outlined. If you're looking for a package deal, some sites offer packages that might include transportation or even your Oktoberfest outfit.
Some travel agencies also specialize in Oktoberfest travel packages, which can sometimes secure spots at campsites even when they appear booked. It might be worth exploring those avenues if you’re struggling to book independently.
Oktoberfest camping for free: volunteering opportunities
Did you know that you can stay in an Oktoberfest campsite for free? You’ll find several opportunities at Worldpackers, a work exchange platform that connects hosts in need of help with travelers eager to volunteer in exchange for accommodation.
There are Oktoberfest campsites listed as hosts there, and you can easily access the website or app to see the tasks required and benefits offered and apply to be a volunteer.
Check out a few of the positions available for volunteering at Oktoberfest campsites and some reviews from former volunteers:
1. Volunteer setting up tents and greeting customers
Lost Souls Travel Co. is recruiting volunteers for their Oktoberfest campsite to work as hosts. The first port of call is setting up tents of various sizes (single occupancy tents up to glamping tents). During the festival, your job is to meet and greet the customers, show them to their tents, socialize, drink beers with them and overall make sure they have a good time.
After the customer checks out of the campsite, you'll help clean the tent and get it ready for the next arrival. Then, helping pack the tents away ready for next year. They require people to either be there for set up, or pack down. There’s plenty of time to for you to go into the festival, but generally from Thursday to Saturday you'll be working.
"I cannot recommend this experience enough. One of the most amazing opportunities I've ever been given. You become a family with the team. Everyone is so kind and welcoming. The work is fair and you are more than looked after. I had sooo much fun and met incredible people! I miss my family there soo much and hope to be back next year!", said Caylah, from Australia.
2. Help make this Oktoberfest camping experience amazing
Yes Trips is also looking for volunteers for their Oktoberfest camping. As a volunteer, you'll handle various tasks to keep the campsite running smoothly. You'll manage booking systems and payments, work day and night reception shifts, and assist with housekeeping and cleaning to maintain a tidy environment and welcoming guests. You'll also help set up and decorate tents and the reception area, ensuring proper use of materials and equipment. Additionally, you'll perform maintenance tasks to keep the facilities in good working order.
"I had a wonderful experience. I would definitely recommend it If you want to make new international friends, have fun, work and drink beer. Laura is amazing, she was always there whenever someone needed something. It's one in a lifetime experience, we had to work really hard, but also had lots of time for partying and going to Oktoberfest. I made lots of friends that ended up becoming a family. Everyone was super collaborative. We slept in big tents, had clean toilets and hot showers. If you like partying and teamwork this is the right place to volunteer", said Asuncion, from Argentina.
3. Volunteer with housekeeping, reception or at the kitchen
And this is yet another option for volunteering at an Oktoberfest campsite, with three different roles available. In the housekeeping team you will help to sweep/clean the tents, organize the sleeping materials, help with laundry and assist with making breakfast for the guests and meals for the team. If you apply for volunteering at the reception, you'll be expected to welcome people with a smile and check them in, give them tips for their stay and help them if there are any issues.
Or you might be part of the kitchen team, where you'll focus on making a nice and healthy lunch and dinner for the staff, doing groceries and making sure there is enough food in stock for staff meals and guests’ breakfast. In exchange for your help, you get a private tent, airbed, pillow, sleeping bag, laundry and 3 meals per day. And of course, the most unforgettable Oktoberfest adventures!
"This was such an incredible experience and I left with so many strangers that became family. This was definitely the definition of work hard play hard, although the work sometimes felt long, there was never a time where I felt alone. Every single person working at the hostel including all the managers, helped make every single shift fun no matter the circumstances. I've never gotten so many hugs/ laughed so consistently. I would recommend this experience 100x over. the hostel and all the people I met will forever hold a special place in my heart. PROST!", said Tali, from the US.

Here is your Oktoberfest camping checklist to keep you comfortable and prepared for all the festivities. Make sure you check with the campsite or your Worldpackers host whether you need to take the basics listed below (tent, mattress and sleeping bag are often provided).
The basics:
Tent: A sturdy, waterproof tent (unless provided by your campsite).
Sleeping bag and pillow: Essential for a good night's rest after a day of festivities.
Camping mat or air mattress: Because comfort shouldn't be compromised.
Headlamp or flashlight: You’ll need a handy source of light when you return to your tent.
Portable charger: Crucial for keeping those Insta-worthy moments documented.
Oktoberfest necessities:
Lederhosen or Dirndl: This goes without saying. Immerse yourself in the traditional spirit by donning your best Oktoberfest attire.
Cash is king. Euros, that is: Credit cards aren’t always accepted in tents.
Comfortable shoes: You'll be doing a lot of walking at the festival, so prioritize footwear that will last through the fun.
Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated between those delicious beers.
Comfort and practicalities:
Warm layers: Munich in the fall can get chilly, especially at night. Bring cozy layers to wear around the campfire or on the way back to your tent.
Rain gear: It wouldn't be Oktoberfest without a sprinkle of rain (or downpour.). A rain jacket or poncho will keep those spirits high even with soggy shoes.
Travel towel and toiletries: A lightweight, quick-drying towel is preferable.
Ear plugs and eye mask: Perfect for those seeking some rest amongst the revelry.
Foldable backpack: Easy to pack and even easier to whip out for carrying around any Oktoberfest goodies.
Dry bag: Keep valuables like your phone and cash dry in case of a sudden shower.
First-aid kit: Bandages and painkillers are useful for those unexpected Oktoberfest mishaps.
Snacks: A little something to nibble on because late-night cravings do happen.
Oktoberfest camping is an immersion into the heart of Bavarian culture, surrounded by kindred spirits united by a love for beer, camaraderie, and a whole lot of fun. Remember, these lists serve as your foundation.
